Forked
Sharp, hilarious, and unexpectedly gut-punching, FORKED is an award-winning, one-hander tour-de-force monodrama about identity, cultural confusion, and figuring out who you are when everyone else has already decided for you.
The play follows Jeanette Peh - a highly Westernised Singaporean junior college graduate - decides to follow her dreams to London, where she will hopefully find her occidental soulmates. On arrival, however, she is dismayed to find that her teacher and classmates label her as just one of the "Asian students". Monsieur Laroche, her acting teacher, wants her to perform honestly by speaking in her native language. There's just one problem: Jeanette is beginning to realize she doesn't know what her native language is. In fact, she doesn't really know who she is at all.
Inspired by my own experiences as a fish-out-of-water Singaporean studying at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris - fellow alumni might find the mentor character very familiar.
FORKED has toured Singapore, Edinburgh and Kuala Lumpur to acclaim.
